Privacy Policy

Effective date: 1 May 2026

Know Your Election ("we", "us", or "our") operates the website at knowyourelection.com ("the Site"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, what cookies and similar technologies are used on the Site (including by Google AdSense and Google Analytics), and the choices you have. By using the Site you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

a) Information You Provide

  • Contact and feedback forms: If you contact us via our contact page, the error report form or by email, we collect your name, email address and the content of your message.
  • Error reports: When you report a data issue, we collect the details you submit along with your IP address for abuse prevention and to follow up on the report.

b) Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage data: We log search queries you make on the Site (for example, the year, state and constituency you search for) so that we can improve our content and user experience.
  • Log data: Our servers automatically record your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, the pages you visit and timestamps. This is standard server log information used for security, debugging and analytics.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: We and our service providers use cookies, web beacons and similar technologies as described in Section 4 below.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide, maintain and improve the Site, its content and features.
  • To respond to your inquiries, feedback and support requests.
  • To analyse Site usage and understand how visitors interact with our content.
  • To detect, investigate and prevent fraud, abuse or security issues.
  • To serve advertisements (including personalised ads, where you have consented) through Google AdSense and to measure their performance.
  • To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

3. Third-Party Services

a) Google AdSense and Advertising

We use Google AdSense, a service provided by Google LLC, to serve advertisements on the Site. The following disclosures are required by Google's policies:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to our Site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Users may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • Alternatively, users may opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info (Digital Advertising Alliance) or www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ (Network Advertising Initiative).
  • For information about how Google uses data when you use our partners' sites or apps, please review "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services".
  • Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

Some of our advertising partners may also use cookies and web beacons. These third-party ad servers or ad networks use technology in their respective advertisements and links that appear on the Site and that are sent directly to your browser. They automatically receive your IP address when this occurs. These technologies are used to measure the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns and/or to personalise the advertising content that you see. We have no access to or control over these cookies that are used by third-party advertisers.

b) Consent for Personalised Advertising (EEA, UK, Switzerland)

If you are visiting the Site from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we use Google Consent Mode v2 together with a cookie consent banner to obtain your consent before any non-essential cookies (analytics or advertising) are set. By default, advertising and analytics storage are denied until you click "Accept All". You may change or withdraw your consent at any time by clearing your browser cookies for this Site, which will cause the consent banner to appear again on your next visit.

c) Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the Site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit the Site, what pages they view and what other sites they used prior to coming here. Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit the Site, rather than your name or other identifying information. We do not combine the information collected through Google Analytics with personally identifiable information. You may opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

d) Other Third Parties

The Site loads styles and scripts from public content delivery networks (CDNs) such as jsDelivr, Cloudflare and Google Fonts. These services may log access requests for the limited purpose of operating their CDN. We do not share personal information with these CDNs beyond what is required for them to deliver content to your browser.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. We use the following categories of cookies:

  • Strictly necessary cookies: required for basic Site functionality such as session management, CSRF protection and remembering your cookie consent choice. These cookies cannot be disabled through our consent banner.
  • Analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics to help us understand aggregate Site usage patterns. These are loaded only after you click "Accept All".
  • Advertising cookies: set by Google AdSense and its advertising partners to serve, frequency-cap, attribute and measure advertisements, including personalised ads where you have consented. These are loaded only after you click "Accept All".

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, browser add-ons or the opt-out links provided in Section 3 above. Note that disabling strictly necessary cookies may impair the functionality of the Site.

5. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, including any legal, accounting or reporting requirements. Server log data is typically retained for up to 90 days. Google Analytics data is retained according to the period configured in our GA4 property (currently 14 months for user-level and event-level data). Aggregated, de-identified analytics data may be retained for longer.

6. Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the personal information we collect, including HTTPS encryption in transit and access controls on our servers. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without verified parental consent, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at knowyourelection@gmail.com.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access, correct, update or request deletion of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Withdraw your consent for data processing where consent is the legal basis (for example, by clearing cookies and re-evaluating the consent banner).
  • Object to or restrict the processing of your data.
  • Request data portability where applicable.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at knowyourelection@gmail.com. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.

9. International Data Transfers

Some of our service providers (including Google) operate globally and may process information in countries outside your own. Where this happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses and the providers' own certifications (for example, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) to protect your information.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page and updating the "Effective date" above. Your continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
