A guide to the world's largest democratic exercise
India is the world's largest democracy, with over 96 crore (960 million) registered voters as of 2024. The country follows the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where the candidate who receives the most votes in a constituency wins the seat, even without an absolute majority. Elections are conducted by the autonomous Election Commission of India (ECI), established in 1950.
India holds two types of direct elections: Lok Sabha (Parliament) elections for 543 constituencies across the country, and Vidhan Sabha (State Assembly) elections for each state's legislative body. While Lok Sabha elections are held every five years nationally, state assemblies follow independent election cycles. Know Your Election provides comprehensive data for both, covering every constituency from India's first general election in 1951 to the most recent elections.
The Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament. Its 543 members represent parliamentary constituencies distributed across all states and union territories. Uttar Pradesh has the most seats (80), followed by Maharashtra (48) and West Bengal (42). Of the 543 seats, 84 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 47 for Scheduled Tribes.
The party or coalition winning a majority (272+ seats) forms the central government and its leader becomes the Prime Minister of India.
Each Indian state has its own legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha) with varying numbers of constituencies — from 40 in Goa to 403 in Uttar Pradesh. State assembly elections determine which party forms the state government and appoints the Chief Minister. States conduct elections independently, so different states vote at different times throughout the five-year cycle.
Our database covers assembly elections across all major states, with constituency-level candidate data, vote shares, and victory margins.
